A short biography:On April 4th 1966 63 pupils started attending their lessons at
Realschule in the building of a former elementary school. Five years later the school
moved to the present building at Breslauer Platz. Today 498 girls and boys (aged 10-18
years) attend the three-section (in year 9 four-section) secondary school.
A variety of special rooms enable the
school to provide a modern education. There are special rooms for chemistry, physics,
biology, geography, textiles, home economics, art, music, technology, a media room and
last but not least two gyms and two computer rooms.
Some active mothers come to our bio-shop during the breaks. They take care of the
pupils' healthy nourishment in the mornings.
House rules [Hausordnung] established by pupils and
teachers organize life at school. |

Offers: |
Class 5 and 6: [test stage]
The newcomers in class 5
start their learning and training period at our Realschule with a rally through the
school building. Many five formers already know our school. During 'Open Days' or 'Working
Days' offered to pupils of the primary schools the boys and girls can attend lessons of
year 5. The time-table of the test stage is enlarged by the differentiation starting with
year 7.

| During
the whole test stage the pupils' developments are given special attention. In many
conferences partly together with the former primary school teachers the progress of
development and learning is analyzed to be able to make a sound decision about the further
school career at the end of the test stage. |
 |
|
| Class 6: |
| From
year 6 French is added as a second foreign language for all our pupils. After one year it
can be substituted for another subject if another main emphasis of inclination is chosen
in year 7. With the main emphasis of inclination 'foreign languages' French as a subject
with written class tests is taught till the end of the school career. |

|
| Class 7 to 10: |
Before starting with year 7 pupils of our school choose a main
emphasis of inclination and at the beginning of year 9 an additional compulsory optional
subject. It also depends on the different election behaviour of the single year
which subjects as main emphasis of inclination does take place in the end. The
differentiation enables an education according to inclination - as well as with regard to
the later choice of occupation. At the moment the following subjects with written class
tests besides German, Maths and English
are taught at our school from year 7 to 10. |
| French |
Biology |

Social Studies |

At the beginning of year 9 the following subjects are offered as an
additional compulsory optional subject: |

Home Economics |

School & job: |
Early information for pupils about vocationally orientated
suitability, education and demand can help to prevent seriously wrong decisions concerning
the later choice of occupation. That is why this topic is paid special attention to at our
school.
From year 8 the
orientation of the choice of occupation starts with different tours of factories and the
'job-finding-days' during which pupils gain first impressions about the professional
world.
From year 9 the
refered to topic is considerably broadened. In particular the pupils receive the following
offers: |
| > interdisciplinary the working- and vocational world
is introduced. |
| > visit to the job information centre in the city of Hagen. |
| > information about the vocational school college in
Ennepetal. |
| > a 3-week work
experience. |
| > various tours of
factories. |
| > individual
consultation by a careers-teacher. |
| > application
training and job interviews. |
|
A member of the local job centre is regularly available for the
pupils of year 9 and 10 at our school. |
 |
|
Projects: |
| Apart
from the week of project teaching which takes place for all pupils of our school
every year some classes or stages also work on special topics across the disciplines in
project form. |
>> An example from
the science department:
The project 'Water' |
 |
Pupils of year 7 worked in groups on self-chosen questions
concerning the topic "water" for over 20 lessons. While one group analyzed the
chemical water composition of a local brook a second group kept a close eye (in the true
sense of the word) on the macro-organisms of the brook. The aim of both groups was the
determination of the ecological state (water grade I-II) and the drawing up of a water
grade map.
Besides these
ecologically orientated groups, physical phenomena connected with water (density anomaly,
buoyancy...) were examined by a further group and the last group looked into the chemical
properties and the molecular construction of water.
During this project
orientated teaching two day trips were carried out and finally the different test results
were presented in the form of experimental performances and a documentation. |

Class
trips:
|
| Class-
and hiking trips belong to the traditional extracurricular offers of our school. Besides
many one-day-walks, hikes and study trips several-day trips are carried out: |
| > in the test stage (Class 6) 3-4 days. |
| > in year 7 3-5 days. |
| > in year 10 a one-week study trip. |
|
Last year's destinations have been besides others the cities of Prague, Paris and also South Tyrol [skiing].
Reports from the study trips can be seen here
Dennis Warschewitz, a
former pupil of our Media-Club, has published his impressions from his trip to London on
the Web. You can visit his Web-Site here:

Internet: |
At first our Internet access was mainly used by the freaks of the
Media Club but now our new conception is a more intensive integration of this media into
everyday school life. With the help of a router the networking of the computers offers the
simultaneous research for many pupils in the web, so that the Internet can become a
constant component of daily teaching. |
| Furthermore the following events have been offered by the project
management at our school since September 1998: |
| > coaching of classes that do research for their
lessons by the project manager [additional to the specialist teacher] |
| > inner school further education for teachers with the
topic: How to use the Internet at school |
| > parents information evenings with the topic: The
Internet, chances, benefit and dangers |
| > an Internet café during breaks or free lessons is
planned |
