| Driving
country road L 699 from Ahlhausen to the Ennepe reservoir - about 10 kilometres (approx. 6
miles) - it can hardly be imagined today, that a few decades ago life in the valley was
characterized by several dozens of hammer mills. Many of them no longer exist others are
only perceptible when taking a closer look. At the beginning, the iron-ore mined in the surrounding areas was
worked on in mostly small factories with the help of the water energy of the Ennepe. The
main stress was put on the manufacturing of small iron, as a rule tools and parts of
tools. (Those who are interested in history should have a look at the project of
Hauptschule Friedenshöhe which gives a very vivid description of the industrial
development of the upper Ennepe valley.)
Nowadays the valley of the Ennepe is
a favourite destination specially for the population of the bordering Ruhr Area.
